English Phonology

Phonology is the branch of linguistics which investigates the ways in which sounds are used systematically in different languages to form words and utterances (Katamba, 1989). There are 3 key terms:
Phone – sound that is actually heard [  ]
Phoneme – more theoretical (idea) of a sound /  /
Allophone – nondistinctive realization of the same phoneme
This organization is explained in phonological rules
Phoneme is the smallest unit of sound in a language which can distinguish two words. (ex. Pan ≠ ban, ban ≠ bin). Therefore /p/, /b/, /æ/, /i/ are phonemes. There are 44 phonemes in English: 24 consonants, 20 vowels.
Phonetics is the study of the inventory of all speech sounds which humans are capable of producing. Mengkaji semua ranah bunyi yang dihasilkan alat ujar (speech organs)
Phone + logos = phonology
Phone = sound
Logos= science
Phonologyà the science of sounds
The scientific study of sounds system
Phoneme
morpheme
Phonetics is the study of speech sounds.
Articulatory phonetics – how speech sounds are produced (studi mengenai cara menghasilkan bunyi)
Acoustic phonetics – the transmission and physical properties of speech sounds (menelaah ciri-ciri fisik bunyi dengan menggunakan instrumen lab)
Auditory phonetics – perception of speech sounds (berkaitan dengan cara mempersepsi bunyi)
Phonetic transcriptions – one sound = one symbol.
Articulatory Phonetics
It deals with the way in which speech sounds are produced (position of lips & tongue, how far open the mouth, whether or not the vocal cords are vibrating, etc)
The Organs of speech
It can be found in three area of the body:
a.In the chest are the lungs
b.In the throat is the larynx or voice box
c.In the head are the organ of articulation in the upper part of the mouth are (uvula, soft palate, hard palate, alveolar ridge, upper teeth, upper lip and in the lower part of the mouth are the tongue, lower teeth, and lower lip. The tongue has been divided into three parts: the back, the front, & the apex (tip) or (the mid) and two cavity (oral or mouth & nasal or nose)
Speech mechanism
Inflectional
You are expected to know and be able to:
1.Identify English verb agreement
2.Describe person and number agreement
3.Identify genitive markers
4.Analyze noun markers of plurality
An Inflectional is a particular bound morpheme expressing an inflectional distinction or a grammatical marker, such as affix, that is used as a signal of a grammatical property. The inflections cannot change the word class of derived bases. The inflections can be categorized into the following:

1. Verb agreement (concord)
a noun phrase functioning as a subject usually agrees with its verb in a clause, consider the following ex in English
a. Jill is an English student
b. Jill kicks the ball
2. Person and number agreement
  see ex in Arabic,
  a. HUMA YAJLIS-AANI FID DAARI
(they (two males) sit at the door)
  b. HUMA TAJLIS-AANI DID DAARI
(they (two females) sit at the door)

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

1.1.    Background of the Study
Literature is a medium through which a person can convey his or her ideas or protest against different norms of society. Those works that deal with a normal issue are particularly purpose in mind. An author can communicate with the readers of a literary work if they can understand what the author wants to send. The author expresses his or her feeling, thought, ideas, or arguments about the social issues by writing those issues in a form of literary work.
Literary work has two main elements, which can be analyzed. They are intrinsic elements or objective approach and extrinsic elements. Intrinsic element (objective element) are elements of literary work that build up the structure of literary work it self. Plot, character, setting, theme, point of view, style and atmosphere are the examples of the intrinsic elements. Sukada (1987: 47) stated that intrinsic elements are the whole elements which build up a literary work.
On the other hand, extrinsic elements are elements which come out of literary work such as history, social culture, religion, psychology, and philosophy.
We as the reader cannot understand the detail of certain literary work without knowing the two elements. Both of the two elements of literary work is very important to analyze in order to appreciate the literary work.
Literature is human personal expression especially thought, feeling, enthusiasm, and concept in a certain description. Which can as a communication media (Sumarjo and Saini, 1991: 3).
Language is very artistic medium or material of all literary. It is used to express subject matter. Literary works are differently from the language is used everyday. Literary is one of the element of culture is used to express human thought and idea. It expresses phenomenon of human life and their environment.
There are many kinds of literary works that is drama, poetry and novel. Poetry is literary work that has stipulations about number of word, verse, rhyme and rhythm. Novel difference with poetry, novel did not have stipulations. The word used in the novel is unlimited. It is up to the author. Plot in the novel can be followed by the story of language. Then drama is very easy to be followed by readers or audiences because an author tells the events completely. The reader can enjoy and can be anxious until the end of the story. Perhaps the script of the text of drama is so boring in the readers. They only read about it because the content of the script majority is the dialogue between one player with others. So that’s why the writer select novel as the subject matter of the research. it is special literary that make the writer attracted to read and analyze. The content regularly depends on reality, the story advice is very detail and clearly, and certainly it has many educations that the writer gets from the novel.
In analyzing a literary work, we have to be able to provide consideration to the elements in the literary work and to be aware of the detail in it as a work of art. As form, aspect, content, and the society elaborate in it. A literary work it built up from some governing element such as form and content. The form of literary work can only be understood by someone whom read it. Both of them fulfils each other so that the result of the analyzing of literary work will constantly create an impression and realize concerning literary work.
In addition, to analyzing it researching is also necessary to reach an artistic work required by the author. It is started from studying; researching and investigating the literary work so that we can get more understanding and appreciation to the literary work.
In this thesis the writer would like to analyze a novel written by Andrea Hirata. It contents imperials of social and culture life happened in Belitong. It also very dramatic work and consist of some values. In this research, the writer comes to analyze some teaching, related to the educational values.

1.2.    Statement of the problem
In doing the research, the writer states the problem she is going to investigate. So, the writer put one question to explain the content of discussion later.
·           What are the educational values in “Sang Pemimpi” a novel by Andrea Hirata published in 2008?
1.3.    Purpose of the Study
Based on statement before, the purposes of this analysis are:
1.      To identify and interpret the educational values in novel Sang pemimpi
2.      To get the point of the content of the story relating to the educational values of the novel.
1.4.    Scope of the Study
In order to avoid misinterpreting and misunderstanding for the discussion because of the broadness of the problem, the writer limits the scope of this investigation only on discussing of educational values in “Sang Pemimpi” by Andrea Hirata.
1.5.    Significances of the Study
A literary work present some values that the author wants to send through his literature work including novel. As a result, the writer thinks that the significances of the study for the writer are:
1.      The writer is interested in analyzing the novel of ‘Sang Pemimpi”, because the novel shows some aspects of life in Belitong. Here the writer is able to solve the problem of nowadays.
2.      The writer hopes the readers will be capable to know how to analyze a novel and grasp some values in novel especially edu cational values.
3.      This thesis turns into guideline of next researcher in the some context.
1.6.    Definition of Key Terms
In order to avoid misunderstanding and interpreting the meaning of the term used in the analysis, the writer considered worthwhile to elaborate and define the term which are relevant to this analysis.
1.      Analysis
Analysis is process in sequence of research task before write down the report (Purnawan Junaidi, 1995: 2). According to Longman Dictionary of contemporary English, Analysis is an examination of something together with thought and judgment about it (Quick, 1989: 3).
In this research analysis means to analyze the educational values in novel “Sang Pemimpi”.
2.      Education
Education is the process of educating or teaching. Educating is further defined as “to develop the knowledge, skill, or character. Thus, from these definitions, we might assume that the purpose of education is to develop knowledge, skill, or character. Unfortunately, this definition offers little unless we further define words such as develop knowledge and character.

3.      Values
Values closely related to good and bad thing. Something is good or bad depend much on the values consisted in it. However the goodness is closely related to the thing and values related closer to respond of something good (Dick Hartoko, 1985: 38).
According to Purwadarmita (1984: 47-50) standard of goodness can be observed from many aspects and goodness depends on values implied in it. Something is said to be good if it is useful and has positive implication towards people practice in daily life.
4.      Novel
Novel is used in its broad sense to designate any extend fictional prose narrative. In practice, however its uses are customarily restricted to narratives in which the representation of character occurs either in a static condition or in the process of the development as the result of event or action. (Holman & Harmon, 1986: 335).
Novel also means long story. Long in this case means, it has complex plot, many character, complex themes, various atmosphere and various setting. (Sumarjo & saini 1991:29).
5.      SANG PEMIMPI is the title of the novel by ANDREA HIRATA.

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF THE RELATED LITERATURE

2.1.  Biography of the Author
Andrea Hirata was born on 24 October. He is a novelist of Indonesia who comes from Belitong Island Bangka Belitung. An introduction to a movie and a tetra-logy novel by Andrea Hirata: SANG PEMIMPI. Secondly, Sang Pemimpi is a novel, telling us about Ikal and his brother struggling to reach their dream after they graduate from SD.
Titles of those novels are:
Book 1: Laskar Pelangi (Rainbow's Army)
Book 2: Sang Pemimpi (The Dreamer)
Book 3: Edensor (Edensor)
Book 4: Maryamah Karpov (Maryamah Karpov) -not yet published-
Even though, his study major is Economy, but he really delights science, physic, chemistry, biology, astronomy, and certainly literature. Andrea really made identical himself as an academies and backpacker. Andre is going to get his other dream to live in Key Gompa, the tallest village of the world in Himalaya.
Andrea has an education of economy at Indonesia University. He got a scholarship from Europe to study Master of Science at University’ de Paris, Sorbonne, French and Sheffield Halam University, United Kingdom. His thesis In Economic telecommunication got award from both university and he graduated with cumlaude. This thesis has to be changed into Indesian and it is the first book of Economic theory telecommunication that is written in Indonesian. That book has been turn as scientific reference. And now Andre Hirata lives in Bandung and work at PT. Telkom Centre.
2.2.  Novel
Literature is often said to be a school of life in that the authors tend to comment on the conduct of society and individuals in society. They either point out what they see as important issues in human affairs or propose ideal alternative to the way thing actually are the custom and more of particular social group or individuals their aspirations and values explored and exposed (Taylor, 1981:12)
Novel is a prose narrative fiction. Taylor, (1981 : 46) stated that a prose works of quite some length and complexity which attempts to reflect and express something of the quality or value of human experience or conduct.
A novel is almost the same as a short story; they both are included in prose narrative fictions that have similarity in the intrinsic element such as plot, character, theme, setting etc.
Novel is narrative text informing of prose with a long shape that is including some figures and fiction event. According to Sumardjo, novel is a story with the prose form in long form, this long form means the story including the complex plot, many character and various setting (1998:29).

2.3.  Educational Values
Living together in group not only can be found in human being, but also be found in animal. But the difference is just the human being has a rule, norms, and life values.
Values can be separated from education, because value is closely related to the good or bad case. Things depend on values implied in it.
Lunberg (1992: 182) says, something contains values if only someone do something according to the values it self understood, and have some belongings it. (Lunberg in Dljoeni, 1992: 182).
There are many interpretations about value. There is a philosopher (Ahmad Tafsir 1990; 18) who says that the value is something which can create attention or as subject of attention. Other opinion said that value is something that is more attended. Values means the ability that can give prosperity. In general, values means “A worth” or some kinds of characteristic, which is owned by something. Then in connection with this, value is said to be the beliefed of activity of any object, which causes it to be of interest to an individual or group.
Ki Hajar Dewantara identifies education as an effort to improve the development of good manner and intellect. In the narrower sense “education” is restricted to the function of community which consist in passing on its tradition, is background, and its outlook to the member of the rising generation.
In addition, Ki Hajar Dewantara stated the education defined as an effort to improve the development of advance in perfecting the life as “Life in society” (Ki Hajar Dewantara, 1962: 14).
Commonly, the purposes of education can be abbreviated to form an advance of the person individually to become a fully functioning person.
Based on the opinion above we can conclude the education values are something useful for human to the form of good action and behaviour. Aspect of the educational values that the writer would like to discuss in this thesis related to social and religious aspect.
2.4.   Element of the novel
1.      Theme
Theme is an idea of a story. At the time author writes a story, he does not only want to tell a story, but also want to say something to his readers. It can be a social life problem, his way of life, or his comment toward this life etc.
According to Stanton (1965:88) and Kenny (1966:20) theme is meaning that contained in a story. Authors use dialogue of character, their ways of thinking, feeling, events, and setting to clarify the theme. Theme is idea of a story. At the time author writes a story, he does not only want to tell a story, but also want to say something to his readers. Social life problem, his way of life, or his comment toward life, so forth.

Theme is that controlling idea or belief as to what is important and unimportant in life. It gives a basic meaning to a literary work. Generally, theme is inferred from the other elements in the short story and often evolves through conflict(s) experienced by the main character.
Them is revealed through the values of characters when confronting obstacles and resolving conflict in pursuit of their goal. It can be considered the foundation and purpose of novel. Without purpose, the story becomes trivial.
2.      Plot
Plot is a series of events that is tied based on the relation of its creation in chronological events and they are related to another based on the cause – effect from the beginning of the story until the end. The events in the story are not independent, but they are related to one another. So, one event will influence the others.
According to Forster, plot is events in the story that has pressure to causal relationship (1970:93). According to Stanton (1965:14) the story contains the sequence of the events but every events are connected by causal relationship, one event cause or caused to the other events.
The term plot refers to the systematic chain of events which make up the story. Each link in this chain helps to build suspense and to solve a problem. The main character is presented with a situation which presents a problem or conflict which he must resolve. The largest part of the story will deal with the main character’s struggle to resolve this problem or conflict.
According to Milan (1987:419), there are six steps of plot, they are:
a.       Exposition
Exposition is the way on which the author introduces the main characters and orients the reader to the setting, such as time and place.
An exposition is just an explanation of some sort of material that may be difficult to explain. It is also described as the act of exposing. Exposition of a novel is a statement or rhetorical discourse intended to give information about or an explanation of difficult material. Setting, characters, main conflicts are introduced to the reader; this is the beginning of a novel or story and may be short or long, but is always flat (little action or emotion).
b.      Rising Action
Rising action is the series of events that lead to the climax of the story usually the conflicts or struggles of the protagonist. The rising action’s purpose is usually to build suspense all the way up the climactic.
The round characters are developed, the conflicts are increased and acted out in many ways, motives are introduced, things happen; generally, the major part of a novel or story.
Once the conflict is presented, the crisis occurs and the suspense builds. Complications arise, decisions are made and actions are taken, all developing the central conflict and opening it up to different resolutions.
c.       Conflict
Conflict has become a broad term in literary works and it now includes almost any problem the protagonist may have. It can encompass a struggle between the protagonist and another creature, obstacles society puts in the protagonist’s way, a battle against nature, and a mystery unravelled, or internal and emotional issues being solved.
d.      Crisis / climax
Climax is the high point of a story in which the major conflicts erupt in some kind of final showdown (fight, argument, violent or physical action, very tense emotional moment) at the end of the climax, the ‘winner’ will be clear (there is not always a winner!).
The climax is the moment of maximum intensity. It is a feature of oratory, when a sequence apparently moving to a climax is unexpectedly, interrupted by a weaker element.
If the action was rising up until the climax, then the climax is the highest point of the action, from which tensions will fail. Emotions are at a peak and the action taken is the focus of the story.

e.       Falling Action
After the climax, all events leading to the resolution are the falling action. Characters sort out complications and display their emotions following the climax, all of them guiding the reader to the resolution.
The falling action in a work of literature is the sequence of events that follow the climax and end in the resolution. This is in contrast to the rising action which leads up to the plot’s climax.
The falling action is the part of story, usually found in tragedies and short stories, after the climax and showing the effects of the catastrophe.
The falling action in a story is where some of the problems previously introduced begin to be resolved. Including the central problem.
f.       Denouement / Resolution / Conclusion
Resolution is the part in the story where the nail biting plot, mystery, or situation in the book is finally solved and the climax of the story is brought to an ending.
Where everything ends; the reader may have some sense of “closure” or maybe asked to think about what might come next; in fairy tales, the Happy Ending; in some novels, you will read about the characters many years later.
Problems are finally solved and the conflict resolved for good or bad. The importance of the denouement is to give the reader a sense of completion and satisfaction. The resolution need not necessarily be good in order to achieve the sense, although for young readers the resolution is often an agreeable and a moral one.
The term plot refers to the systematic chain of events which make up the short story. Each link in this chain helps to build suspense and to solve a problem. The main character is presented with a situation which presents a problem or conflict which he must resolve. The largest part of the story will deal with the main character’s struggle to resolve this problem or conflict.
3.      Character
Character is a person in a story or a play (Duffy and Pettit, 1953:24). Character development involves both physical description and classification of the mental and spiritual qualities of the person.
The general character in a story, whether he is sympatric or an unsymphatic person, is related to the protagonist, they forced arrayed against him, whether person or things, they are the antagonist (Perrine, 1978:43).
According to Nurgiyantoro (2000: 165) states that term “character” that refers to subject of the story. Generally characters are human, character as subject of the story hold important roles in developing the story. Moreover, characters that those are created by an author hold important roles in constructing the reader subjectivity. The character appearance created by the author influences the reader’s mind about ideal characters. The good of bad characters created by an author are implanted in the readers mind and stay longer. How strong the characters are represented by an author.
According to Abrams (1981 : 20), characters are people in dramatic or narrative works, who are interpreted by the readers as being endows with moral and dispositive, qualities that are expressed in what they say dialogue, and by what they do action.
According to Aminudin (1990: 79), characterization is the way of the author to show the figure and to show character of the story. The author needs to characterization which builds up the story plot and development of the story in which the figure win live and life in the fiction.
According to Subhan (2003: 810, character and characterization can be classified into two groups, they are:
a.       The Major or Main Character
The major characters play an important role in the story or the novel. The major characters can further be analyzed into three groups they are as follows: (1) protagonist (2) antagonist (3) companion.
b.      Minor Character
Minor character or we often called supporter of the drama, novel and they do not have an important role.
4.      Setting
According to Hudson (1960:158), setting is a whole environment of the story, including the customs and tradition, habits, and the character’s way of life.
Setting is place; time and social condition that become place for figures and affected an event (B. Nurgiyantoro, 2000:75) setting will influence the action and way of thought of figures.
Setting or the time and place of the action in a story have a definite impact on the character development and plot. The setting is often found in the exposition of the plot and readily establishes time and place. Frequently it plays an important role in the conflict giving credence to the rising action as a climax or turning point is approached.
The element of setting in a story quite readily lends itself to writing activities that focus on figurative language and effective use of adjectives to create vivid, exact sense images and impressions.

We can conclude that setting is dealing with situation where and when events happen toward character. If the setting of the story can be changed by any place without changing or influencing the character and theme, the theme is not integral
5.      Point Of Views
Point of view is a term which refers to the relationship between story teller, the story and the reader (Stone, et al., 1983:11).
Point of view is a term in the analysis and criticism of fiction. Point of view is way and or opinion used by the author as medium to present figures, action, setting and some events that make a story in fiction work to reader (Abrams 1981:142).
Point of view is a term in the analysis and criticism of fiction. Point of view according to Habiburrahman and Anif (2006:281) is a vision of the author who was realized in the view of character. So the point of view a ganged with style of tells. The kinds of point of view:
a.       The third point of view ’’she/he’’ is a narrator as someone who out of sight in the story that only mention name or personal pronoun.
b.      The first point of view ’’I’’ who involved in that story. He/she is I, the character that tell themselves, telling the event, acts that can saw, felt, and also the other character and reader.
c.       The mixing of point of view is narrator can be changed from technique to other technique to as story that written. It can be a mixing between the first point of view and the third of point of view.
6.      Atmosphere
Atmosphere refers to the mood of the story that is reflected by setting or the implication of its meaning in order to build the mood of the story. To construct the mood of the story such as plot, a good characterization right setting, etc. all elements that must integrate in atmosphere can be built through protagonist. And it is closely related to them. It can not exactly build the theme of story (Taringan, 1984:153).
Atmosphere is the tonality pervading a literary work, which set up in the reading expectation as the course of events, whether happy or (more commonly) disastrous (a glossary of literary terms by M.H Abrahams).

CHAPTER III
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

3.1.  Research Methodology
Literary in this case the research is an effort of searching knowledge and defining it continuously, carefully toward literary cases. It means that the literary research is a science that has obvious object, method and approach. Literary research as a scientific activity must be supported by appropriate method.
Before going to discus the method of this research it is better to define the meaning of the method it self.
Method is a means of procedure especially a regular and systematic way of completing anything (The American Heritage Dictionary, Volume fourth: 826) additionally according to Longman dictionary, of contemporary English method is way of doing something (Quirk, 1987; 681). Moreover Hassan and Koentjaraningrat (1977:16) deepened the method that is a way of work in understanding the object and the objective of the science involved with. They also explained that a method is chosen by consideration its suitability with the object studies, from those definitions, we can conclude that method is a way of work before understanding an object of the research.
It should be notified that the object of this research is a kind of the expression of the idea, thinking and feeling and besides of the purpose of this definition, we can conclude that method is way of work to understand the object of the research. The writer tries to explain the educational values of Sang Pemimpi writer by Andrea Hirata. Having known the definition  and the scope of the educational values, the writer concludes that appropriate method applied in analyzing data is qualitative.
The qualitative method has five characteristics, namely:
a.       Natural setting is data resources and researcher of a key instrument
b.      The qualitative method descriptively,  means that the data is explained in it.
c.       The form of word or picture is not statistic.
d.      The qualitative is considered as more important to process that result.
Data analysis tends to be inductively, it is made not to prove the hypo proposal before but to describe object.
Meaning is special think for that method.
To make this research more specific and more detail, it is important to view that object of research from certain knowledge of view that is called approach. This research will use structural approach limited it self on the research of the literary work it self which is something dependent, so the research is done internally.
3.2.  Data Sources
Data sources refer to certain books. Novel and many others form in which the data are taken. The data source in this study is the novel “sang Pemimpi” by Andrea Hirata. The analysis will be focused on the Educational values of the novel.
3.3.  Method of Collecting The Data.
The writing of this proposal is entirely done though library research. The data are collected from libraries in some places where the related books are available: to gain more detailed information to support the content of this proposal.
In order to collect the significant data or the writer decides to use library as a basic activity of this research writing. The writing collects the data, which are relevant to this from library.
As stated previously, the data needed in this study are all expressions, phrases and statements in the novel. The data that are collected from the source is especially the novel “Sang Pemimpi”.
The information may be taken from several books such as Indonesian Literature.
3.4.  Method of Analyzing The Data
As soon as the significant data are collected the writer comes to analyze about the educational values of”Sang Pemimpi” by Andrea Hirata.
Secondly, the writer read the novel to find some quotation to the object of the study, educational values, and then the writer tries to interpret and explain it. At last the writer put it in the proposal as the result of the research.
The data is then presented in a descriptive method that is by describing the fact about the novel focusing on those questioned values.
The description is then followed by interpretation and analysis making use the concepts related to literature and education values.

CHAPTER IV
FINDING AND DISCUSSION

4.1.      Brief Synopsis of “Sang Pemimpi”, Indonesian version
Arai sebenarnya masih keluarga Ikal. Kedua orang tuanya meninggal dunia ketika ia masih kecil.

They have a strong spirit to create their dreams, live In isolated area, the gloomy side of life, destination, it is not the truly challenge for them to dreams. They didn’t want to surrender to the destiny and their condition. They think that dream is the energy for the present life to step forward into the idea future.
Ikal is a student of SMA Bukan Main in Belitong Island. He is a boy who is really respectful to his parents. He is a hard worker and stands alone. Together with his both close friends. Arai and Jimbron, he works in a harbour as a ngambat (a name of profession in harbour) in the early morning and after that they go to school to get their dreams.
Actually, Arai is Ikal’s family: his parent was death when he was a child. Arai has not any sister and brother, so after both of his parents were death, Arai took care by Ikal’s parent in his village, so that Arai was not just a brother but also a best friend for Ikal. Arai is the open minded and very genius. But Jimbron is a sensitive boy, he is not smart as Arai and Ikal. He is stammer in speaking since his father death. Jimbron has obsession of the horse, even though in his village there is nothing a horse there that he can find.
Ikal, Arai and Jimbron have high solidarity to each other, they tried to get their dreams. At the time PN.Timah Belitong was threatening in collapse, resign from a position in a job, make most of children could not continue their study because their parents wouldn’t able to earn their living. Most of them who really want to study at school, forced to work, and also the tree dreamers. When they graduated at junior high school (SMP), they want to continue the study. Because in their village there was nothing the school for Senior High School, they must go to Magai, 30 kilo meters from their village. So that, they started to live together, they leased a house, while working as diver in golf field, as the office boy in the government institution, and finally become a porter of ngambat which have a duty to wait the sailor and carry on fish by their shoulders to the market. They do this job to fulfil their daily needs. Based on hierarchy of the Job in Magai, a porter of tether is a rough job for those who wants to continue their school or those who are severed because they have not another job. It was proof that the three dreamers’ boys have the hard ambition to continue their study for their idea.
Even they were going to study at school while working; it is not a big challenge to study. Prove that they always in the best ranking in their school. And it makes their beloved man really proud of them.
Like Ikal’s father, he is a calm man but he really loves Ikal. This is a proof when his father must go by bicycle until 30 kilo meters and he takes leave his job for two days to take Ikal and Arai’s rapport. When that day comes, Ikal’s father must wake up early in the morning to prepare him self and wear the tidy clothes, because that is the important day for his life. His father sincerity to take Arai and Ikal’s rapport is forms of his proud from them who are surely worthwhile, because both of them are classified into the third and fifth ranking.
But Jimbron, he is not smart as Arai and Ikal. But he has enough proud to present 78 ranking for his adapted parent. Even he is not easy lost the spirit. He always optimistic in doing everything, for example when he always try to make Lasmi who has many years never give her smile to everyone, then finally he can give her smile. It is caused by Jimbron trial and optimistic.
But the Ikal’s optimistic was not longer than Jimbron. The day after day the optimistic in his soul would be fall down lately, because he was less confidence for his dreams. “even you always fill those many box, like the truly horse, Jimbron, but it never earn your school fee in French”, said Ikal. He was though how he can run to the best school in French like this. It’s impossible!!! At the time by time he becomes real pessimists. He didn’t realize that feeling will be made a fatal to him. And finally, Ikal become a lazy, and didn’t want to study anymore. And of course, he has down ranking. From the third to 75th. . Because of his bad behaviour. Mr. Mustar as Ikal’s teacher was very angry to him. Ah…..your father, when he invited to a district’s inauguration, he didn’t wear his safari costumes. It’s only for you Ikal. What is the best is only for you.
When Ikal realized what he did lately, it was hurt his parent, when he accepted his rapport, Ikal was very sure that his father didn’t want to come to school as far as 30 kilo meters that just make him shy by his son. But Ikal was wrong; his father is a someone who always be patient. He still came by wearing his safari custom with four pockets, and leaves his job for two days, and there was no disappointment in his face. And it make Ikal feel so gloomy and bi guilty about what he had done.
Arai was angry for this happened, he did not understand why Ikal did that big fault.’’ Do you satisfy to look your father was ashamed by you? As you know, someone like us have nothing special, except of our own spirit and just dreams, that’s it!without a dream someone like us will die’’ said Arai wisely. Maybe when we have graduated later, we just someone whose works as pan tin and a porter, but here , in this school we never over precede our destiny, he continued.’’ We just do the best here. We will be wonder to cross over the Europe to the Africa. We will school to France. We will take our foot on the Altar Suci Almamater Sorbonne, whatever happened later’’, Arai was screaming hardly, and finally he made Ikal’s feeling opened once a while. And then Ikal ran to chase his father to ask him for forgive all of his mistakes. And at the time Ikal got spontaneously his spirit to find his dreams again.
And the graduation was come, it is the time for the three boys Ikal, Arai, and Jimbron go to crossing over the seas to get their dreams. But, unfortunately, Jimbron did not follow Arai and Ikal. He just gave two money boxes that he saved special for his lovely friends. He felt that Arai and Ikal have the biggest chance to get it. Caused,by they more genious than him. He was very happy when he could help them with those money boxes. Arai and Ikal really surprised, they were unexpected with Jimbron’s plan.’’ Just take it. Let my life more useful with you. If I can give more than this money boxes, I will give you friend.’’ Go a head!! If you have arrived to the French, over the Europe to Africa, it means that I will be there, go to everywhere together with you’’, jimbron said honestly. He is a best friend who wants to sacrifice to let the best friends find the happiness.
And finally, they went to Jakarta by using Bintang Laut Selatan Ship, and they worked hard to mop deck and hold of a ship, cleaned the toilet and cooking four times in a day. And when they are arrived to Jakarta, they could not study in the campus directly because they did not have any money to earn their living. So that’s why they must spend their  time to work, it is for they daily needs. Till Ikal got the position in a post office. And then Ikal could continue his study at Indonesian University. But ikal and aria must be separated because aria want to find his fortune in Kalimantan.
With their long struggle, study without any money from their parents. They finally being a success man to find their truly dreams reach for academician degree as cumlaude. And after that, they also went abroad to continue their study in French, Universite de Paris Sorbone.

Quotation 1
“Mungkin setelah tamat SMA kita hanya akan mendulang timah atau menjadi kuli, tapi di sini Kal, di sekolah ini, kita tak akan pernah mendahului nasib kita!!’’(Andrea Hirata,2008:153).
“May be when I’ll take a graduation in SMA, It is possible for us to be a pan for tin or become a porter, but here, in this school, we never ever know our destiny!!’’(Andrea Hirata,2008:153).
The statement above shows that Arai was giving advice for Ikal to keep study. Even though, after graduation they will become a pan for tin or a porter more. But, at least he must have an education first. And face what happened to him now. For the future let be the secret of God because sometimes we like to predict our future. But, one thing that we have to know that it is not all of optimistic of the future will be happy. The pessimistic is something usual for everyone, but if we want to survive, so we must have a high spirit and dared to take a dream. Believe that, at the next time we will be more successful. And to get it we need an education background that gives everything we need more than our expectation. Pessimistic is may not done by someone, but optimistic must be stronger, because without the high conviction would be able to walk in way of life which is need a powerful of it because there is always a challenge in front of us. If we can not avoid the small things what about the biggest one.
The educational value of this statement is the education is very important, which is possible make someone get the successful. And do not ever know the destination because it has controlled by Allah SWT. And we also could to change our destiny if we want to change it too.
The statement above
Quotation 2
“Sejak itu, aku mengenal bagian paling menarik dari Arai, yaitu ia mampu melihat keindahan di balik sesuatu, keindahan yang hanya bias orang temui di dalam mimpi-mimpinya’’(Andrea Hirata,2008:51-52).
“Since that, I know the spectacular for Arai’s life that is he able to imagine the beautiful things beside something. The beauty that could be find out of human in a dream’’ (Andrea Hirata,2008:51-52).
The statement above shows that human was created by Allah SWT with the superiority of mind to think about something. However by the superiority, the human should it carefully. Like, Arai, what ever he did, he could use his mind to think a beauty and take a lesson in a problem. Most people looking a problem are just in bad aspect without think that Allah gives any problems with wisdom inside it. We would get all of the superiorities by concerning the two different parts and we choose the best of it. So let use your mind that have been giving by Allah special for us.
The education value of this statement is keeping your problems as you best experience. Consider it as something nicely and believe that you’ll never ever be complaint about it.
Quotation 3
“Tak pantas kita berdebat di depan para orang tua murid. Bicaralah baik-baik, bujuk pak Balia”. (Andrea Hirata, 2008: 8)
“It is not proper we debate in front of the people responsible for a pupil; please speak well, said Mr. Balia”. (Andrea Hirata, 2008: 8)
The statement above shows us that Mr. Balia tried to give an advice to Mr. Mustar could not make a debate in front of the parents there. It possible that the parents thought that the teachers have an education who teach their children were not shame to make a problem out of something in a public, and how they can teach their children if the teachers’ attitude solve those problems by an emotional like that, because if we solve a problem full of wrath in improper condition, it could make a new problem. As a wise teacher, we should give the best example to handle a problem with the respectable ways or by a discussion without silly talk and commotion each other. Because it just showing bad things from our selves.
The educational value of this statement is; the old man should understand how to make a good discussion. So that the disturbance like that it’s not proper to do by the people who have an education.

Quotation 4
“0, 5 itu berarti segala-galanya, Pak. Angka kecil seperempat itu adalah symbol yang menyatakan lembaga ini sama sekali tdak menoleransi persekongkolan’’(Andrea Hirata,2008:8).
“0, 5 is everything, sir. A little quarter score is the symbol that asserts this institute absolutely not tolerance for conspiracy’’ (Andrea Hirata, 2008:8).
The statement above shows that in this case era, the conspiracy in the other side of life often occurred. And so happened between teachers and students’ parents who want to send their children in a best school, even though their skills and the certain requirements on academic could not fulfilled of them. So the system of bribery was did for their wish, and unrealized that they act is a form of crime especially in education life. But it was not to Mr. Balia, he is a professional teacher and has a high commitment to keep a principle and rule that have been determined in his school. Even it is a smallest conspiracy, but it include of a crime that influence for everything, because the big things comes from the small things. And Mr. Balia did not want to risk the future of his school institution with give any tolerance to the small crime, even that special for someone who has already make a big meritorious to keep the school.
The education value of this statement is we may not belittle something even it little. Because, even it small thing, the evil is can not be corrected.
Quotation 5
“Aku belajar bahwa pria pendiam sesungguhnya memiliki rasa kasih saying yang berlebih disbanding pria sok ngatur yang merepet saja mulutnya’’(Andrea Hirata,2008:87)
“I learned that a calmly man is actually has the biggest love and affection than the talk active man which is has an over control habitation’’ (Andrea Hirata, 2008:87).
The statement above shows that sometimes we tried to evaluate someone from his/her physic only and never looked inside it. Everyone has own character to each other. It look like Ikal’s father, he is a silently man, but has great affection and care of his children. Ikal’s father often works than talks, and it showing us how authority he is.
The educational value of this statement is: it is best for you to keep your mouth by silent, but still to take care of the people around us. Than talk more do less, because like the wise word said that silence is golden.
Quotation 6
“Boleh saja rangkingmu tinggi, tapi soal kuda? Kau tak tahu apa-apa,Kal!!’’(Andrea Hirata, 2008:129).
“You may have the best rank, but what about the horse? You know nothing..Kal!!(Andrea Hirata, 2008:129).
The statement above shows that even Ikal has the best rank in his school, but if he asked by another about horse, he knows nothing. But, Jimbron knows everything about horse, even he also did not get high rank like Ikal. It shows that everyone has the own superiority and weakness, because we created by Allah with those both side. And we must respect on lake of another one.
The educational value of this statement is we realize that everyone has weakness, even she/he actually really genius. Because,we can not deny that Allah create us with the weakness and superiority.
Quotation 7
“Ah, ayahmu Ikal, diundang pelantikan Bupatipun baju safarinya tak beliau keluarkan. Hanya untukmu Ikal, yang terbaik dari beliau hanya untukmu’’(Andrea Hirata,2008:149).
“Oh, your father Ikal, when he invited to a district’s inauguration, he did not wear hiss safari custome, it just for you Ikal, what is the best is for you only’’(Andrea Hirata,2008:149).
That statement justifies that all of the best things that ere done by Ikal’s fatherare only for Ikal. And his safari costume with four pockets was only wearing when he acceptance a rapport of his son. Beside that, he never wears it to come on a district’s inauguration invitation. That is the form of his affection to his beloved son. So, it is proper for us as a child to be more respect the sacrifice and appreciation that was given by our parents. For them, the happiness of their children is everything. Even they must sacrifice whatever they have.
The education value of this statement is you do not ever make disappointed your parents who support you to get your ambition.
Quotation 8
“Tanpa mimpi, orang seperti kita akan mati’’(Andrea Hirata,2008:153).
“Without a dream, people like us will die’’ (Andrea Hirata, 2008:153).
The statement contain that everyone must have a dream for the future. Without it, we do not have a purpose of life. And when we have it, so we can be survived even many challenging prevent us. Actually that is a motivation for us to struggle in this life. It has to know that ambition is different with dream, because ambition when we already got it, our struggle is just stop here. But, what about dream, after we find it, we still dream for something else. It seems like when we go to sleep, today we got a dream about our success to finish our school, tomorrow we dream again for something different, and go on till the end of our life. It was described us the dream is something that could be a motivation and have a spirit to works. Even though, we did not have any money, at least we still have dreams as our worthwhile property. Thus without It we have nothing in this life, and it means that we do not have purpose of life. That is the power of dreams.
The educational value of this statement is dream has specific spirit for the human to survive.
Quotation 9
“Ambillah, biarlah hidupku berarti. Jika dapat kuberikan lebih dari celengan itu, akan kuberikan untuk kalian. Marantaulah, jika kalian sampai ke Prancis, menjelajahi Eropa sampai ke Afrika, itu artinya aku juga sampai kesana, pergi berasama-sama dengan kalian (Andrea Hirata,2008:218).
“Take it; let my life to be worth. If I can give you more than those moneyboxes. I’ll give for you. And please go abroad, if you’ve arrived to French, cruise over Europe till an Africa, it means that I have go there too, together with you’’(Andrea Hirata,2008:218).
The statement above identifies that how encourage the sacrifice of a best friend for looking his friends to reach their dreams. That sacrifice was created with give his money boxes to them. And even he supposed have something more than it, he will give it too. He really enough satisfied even he sees his friends will be happy. He thought that their successful is also his success. That is shining example that comes from a best friend. He will be happy when his friends got their dreams too. And he also will be sad when he looks them in sadness.
The educational value of this statement is there is no friendship without a sacrifice and it’s the best part that binds without broken off.

“Even his feels has been smashed to smithereens when his teenager until now, but always be a positive thinker and has the white soul for the real life. I remind for his bad experience, but I am still proud of his personality and spirit of life. The sadness is only shown to him when he tried to read the holly Qur’an, as if was yield, tried to fight the scare to lose his beloved man” (Andrea Hirata, 2008; 33).
The statement above clarifies that the bad experience was not as an obstruction for Arai to get his spirit in this life. He was always positive thinking that his experience was not in tears. But go out to reach his future now. And even he has any problems, the exactly place to share about is just to Allah, who has created the human being in this world. Allah always hears every praying of his slave. And it was written in Qur’an verse that one of our best medicine of all diseases is Al-Qur’an, include of heart disease, it was proofed that when we tried to read or heard it, our heart will be cooling down. That is Arai’s feeling when he read it.

“Grow up, means everything that we’ve did must be computed by Allah, Bron.  And Allah dislike something over” (Andrea Hirata, 2008: 136).
This utterances show that the human life was not did everything that they didn’t like without any limitation. We live in this world should be obey all of norms and rules which have been made by Allah SWT. There was interdiction and command that must be fulfilled. If we break it, so we will get punishment about what we have done. And our age is just begin calculating by Allah is profuse about something. Because it could be make us fall into the bad thing, and later we will in the hell.
The educational value of this utterance is sometimes, something over can be made us fall down into the bad things. An it is not useful for us and our environment.
Quotation 3
“The first thing that you should do is find out the mosque” (Andrea Hirata, 2008:217).
The statement means that where ever we go, the right place which is more save and comfortable for us, especially for Moslem in this world is mosque. This is Allah’s house that always be a best place to stay. A place to do observance of religious duties as our thankful and our presents to him, so it correct that if we find out something that showing statement above for the first time unknown area is mosque.
